Applying for a passport through smartphones may soon become reality

If all goes as per plan applicants from across  the country will soon be able to apply for their passport through their smartphones, using the existing mPassport Seva App. The anncouncement was made recently, at an inaugural event in Hyderabad, where the Joint Secretary (Passport Seva Project) and Chief Passport Office Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi told the media that they are currently working on introducing the ability to fill passport application details out directly on the app. Pardeshi added that they hope to launch this ability in the next few months.

The app, mPassport Seva, is currently available for Android users. If you own a device running Android 2.1 and above, you can download this app and avail a handful of services like passport application status, tracking, locating the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and information on the steps involved in applying for a passport. The app has been developed by the Ministry of External Affairs and was launched in March this year.

Considering the rising number of smartphone users and passport applications – Pardeshi said that the MEA is likely to issue more than 85 lakh passports by the end of 2013 as compared to 74 lakh issued last year – it goes without saying that the move will find its takers.

Incidentally, the website run by the Ministry for External Affairs that enables applicants to fill out their details online was among tech2's 3 Most useful government-run online services' list.
